Matthew Brower

Hailed as “superb” by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Dr. Matthew Brower is a pianist, coach, and MTNA Nationally Certified Teacher of Music whose expertise spans a variety of genres, from classical piano, chamber music, opera, and art song to musical theatre and jazz. Dr. Brower has appeared in many prestigious venues throughout the U.S. and China, including Carnegie Hall, the Kimmel Center, and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, and he has been featured on WRTI, Philadelphia’s classical radio station. He has performed with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia as well as members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and faculty from many leading conservatories.

Dr. Brower is a member of 6-WIRE, a violin-erhu-piano trio that mixes traditional chamber music with new styles from around the world. Their unique and engaging repertoire has included collaborations with musicians from Turkey, Israel, India, and Afghanistan, including members of the Silk Road Ensemble. A Chamber Music of America grantee, 6-WIRE has had the honor of performing for then-Vice President Joe Biden on two occasions. In addition to serving as a University of Delaware Ensemble-in-Residence, they have performed at numerous other universities including Georgetown University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and have upcoming engagements in Georgia and Arkansas. Their debut album, 6th Sense, was reviewed in Gramophone, and their latest album, 6-WIRE on 57th, showcases music from their sold-out 2019 Carnegie Hall concert.

As a vocal coach and choral accompanist, Dr. Brower has held positions at Opera Philadelphia, Westminster Choir College, the Curtis Institute Summerfest Young Artist Voice Program, the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy, Opera in the Ozarks, the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, the University of Delaware, and the University of Pennsylvania. In 2019, Dr. Brower served as Director of the Collaborative Piano Program at the University of Delaware’s Master Players Summer Festival, and in 2020, he served on the faculty of the Collaborative Piano Summer Institute at Louisiana State University.

In addition to accompanying the Oxford Chorale and several chamber ensembles at Oxford, Dr. Brower is an Artist Affiliate in Piano at Emory College and Agnes Scott College and a piano faculty member of the Atlanta Music High School program at the Community Music Centers of Atlanta. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the University of Michigan in 2013 and 2010, respectively, and his Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2008. Prior to his current academic appointments, he was Visiting Assistant Professor of Piano at Washington College in Maryland, where he co-founded the Washington College Piano Festival.
