LaTonia Taliaferro-Smith

Associate Teaching Professor of Biology; Director of Undergraduate Laboratories; Faculty Coordinator for Summer Programs

Dr. LaTonia Taliaferro-Smith is the Director of Undergraduate Laboratories, Faculty Coordinator for Summer Programs, and an Associate Teaching Professor in Biology at Oxford College of Emory University. She received a B.S. in Biology (with Highest Honors) from Dillard University and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Howard University. Following graduate school, Dr. Taliaferro-Smith completed two postdoctoral fellowships before being appointed as a junior faculty member at the Emory University School of Medicine and as a member of the Winship Cancer Institute.

Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that regulate the metastatic behavior of triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs), a particularly aggressive disease with disproportionately high incidences and poor survival outcomes, especially among African-American and Hispanic women. Since joining the Oxford College of Emory University faculty in 2015, Dr. Taliaferro-Smith has developed and taught a diverse range of courses, including BIO-340E (Independent Research and Discovery in Biology), which she designed to provide early undergraduate research experiences. She also teaches BIO-399RE (Independent Research) and BIO-397R (Supervised Reading), offering opportunities for advanced biological study and research projects.

Her innovative teaching extends to interdisciplinary courses such as the first-year Discovery Seminars, "The History of Cancer" and "Biomimicry and Bio-inspirations," which bridges biology, engineering, and architecture, and and co-taught  "Race, Rights, and Recognitions in STEM," a unique side-car course examining sociocultural factors and intersectional identities in scientific research.

As Director of Undergraduate Laboratories, Dr. Taliaferro-Smith manages laboratory preparations for all courses taught in the Biology department and serves as an academic advisor to first- and second-year students. In her role as Faculty Coordinator for Summer Programs, she is working to develop pre-college summer academic programming at Oxford. She remains deeply passionate about teaching, training, and mentoring the next generation of science scholars.

Dr. Taliaferro-Smith's excellence in teaching and mentoring has been widely recognized. She is a 2024 NSF Inclusive STEM Teaching Project Community Facilitator and was nominated for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring Program in 2023. Her numerous accolades include the 2022 Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award, the Gregory-Rackley Faculty Career Development Award, and the Robert Cotter Mizzell and Louise Felker Mizell Teaching Award. She was also honored with the Bloom Inaugural Black Women Excellence Award from Emory University, reflecting her outstanding contributions to both teaching and mentorship.
